Saturday presented a Race officer's dream conditions with sun and wind for the fifth round of the North East Youth Travellers. 13 Derwent juniors were joined by 9 travellers wNEYTS 2ith a handicap fleet of lasers, toppers, fevas ,teras a byte and many optimists. For some this was their first regatta and Race officer Howard gave a clear and concise briefing including good explanations for the U flag and black flag should they be needed! They were !

Race 1 got away cleanly. Conditions were perfect for Mark in the full rig laser who made the best of the triangle course to maximise planeing opportunities and get the win. Maria put distance between herself and the oppie pack with an elegant display of downwind boat speed to take second place.

Sustained by Sue’s great lunch the fleet sailed out for race 2. It’s a brave oppie who tries a port flier when there is a laser on the same start line. It did not come out good! Despite a slight drop in wind speed Mark in his laser still managed to lap the oppies quickly enough for another win. Patrick went for clear air off the start and gained a beautiful lift to give him the lead fNEYTS 1rom the oppie pack and second place.

By race 3 startline competition was hotting up. After a general recall, Howard produced his black flag. Everyone knew what that meant and the next start got away with no problems. Mark set off with his usual efficiency but was caught out with no room on an oppie as he planed dNEYTS 3own to the leeward mark. Having no choice but to hit the mark, an attempt at a quick 360 was rewarded by a dry capsize. It was Oscar Shilling who was leading the hotly competitive oppie fleet and took the bullet.

Mark Donald has done enough with two bullets to win the regatta but with 3 oppies on equal points, second place was awarded on count back to Oscar rewarded by his win. Third place was tied between Maria and Patrick and only thus decided by Appendix 8.2. The regatta competition could not have been closer.

Coaches awards were given to Holly and Sam for sailing their first event and completing all 3 races. Well done!

Thanks go to Howard and his race team for a great days racing. On to Ripon for the final event of the series where the overall champion will be decided.
